Like many around the world I have been glued to the TV watching as much World Cup action as possible. With the conclusion of yesterdays game we now have our finalists Spain and the Netherlands (who do you pick to win it?)
This got me to thinking that this month long tournament is a lot like the job search in a number of ways consider these comparisons.
The Group Stage
World Cup: This is where all 32 teams start on even footing in their respective groups. They play each team in their group once and the two teams with the best record advance.
Job Search: You hear of an opportunity for which you are qualified or you have a list of target companies you are trying to penetrate as part of your marketing plan. You ask your network for referrals, perhaps you send a cover letter or resume, either way you need to finish high enough (get the right referral or a response to your letter/resume) so you can move on. If you have a setback there is still time to recover and finish strong.
The Knockout Stage (quarter-finals, Semi-Finals)
World Cup: Single elimination games, you lose you go home. You win and you live to play another day against a stronger opponent.
Job Search: You have an initial interview and you are asked to return to meet with the hiring manager. You live to play again. You have an initial interview but find out later no additional interviews will be in your future. At first you lose and its time to go home but a resourceful player turns this into a networking/referral opportunity. You live to play another day.
Championship
World Cup: One game with a minimum of 90 minutes for all the marbles. The winner is “World Champion”
Job Search: Final interview or a key network connection or meeting which propels you to greatness and your own form of a “World Championship”
Until next week….
Just make sure your fans don’t wait in the lobby with their vuvuzelas while you are in the interview…….
That is an excellent point it could get rather annoying. How about they use them just to announce your arrival?
[...] In the end, my pursuit of this job followed remarkably like my post titled The World Cup and The Job Search. [...]
