I ran across an interesting blog post earlier this week which contained the results of a survey regarding the cultivation of your network contacts.
The question asked was: “How well do you cultivate and maintain the relationships in your professional network? “
Here are the results:
- 46% I respond to check-ins from others but don’t reach out much on my own
- 44% I regularly reach out to people to check in and see what they’re up to
- 6% I reach out only when I’m looking for a job
- 4% I reach out when I can connect two of my connections
Some pretty interesting numbers here. Less than half the people surveyed reach out to their network on a regular basis, while the rest let their network weaken and possibly forget they even exist. When you think about the effort required to build your network don’t you think its worth just a little bit more to maintain and nurture it? Its really not that hard to do and in the long run can pay dividends for you AND those in your network.
How would you have answered this survey? (I hope you are not in the bottom 10%)
Until next week….
